At least, the lawsuit didn’t much surprise Joel Anderson, given his intensive reporting on the death of Tupac Shakur. Plenty of attention has been given to the 1990s feud between Combs and his record label, Bad Boy Records, and Marion “Suge” Knight, who ran Death Row Records, with most of the blame going to Knight. But “their deadly rivalry was never quite as one-sided as it seemed,” Anderson writes. “And as the recent lawsuit perhaps underscores, Combs also had a penchant for violence and bullying that never seemed to slow his stardom.” Read Anderson’s reflection on Combs’ history, including his alleged role in Shakur’s killing.
Plus: If you’re looking for something to listen to on a car ride this weekend, consider Season 3 of Slow Burn: Biggie and Tupac.
Why Netanyahu changed his mind ✍️
A temporary cease-fire has been reached in the Israel-Hamas war, and the current negotiations include the possibility that this cease-fire could continue for 24 additional hours for every 10 Israeli prisoners Hamas releases. Just days ago, Netanyahu was ruling out the possibility of any kind of cease-fire deal. Fred Kaplan has some thoughts on what changed for Netanyahu.
A bro debate for the ages 🗣️
No one is asking for Ron DeSantis and Gavin Newsom to debate, and yet, they persevere in this perverse quest. Can it get any worse? Yes, yes it can—Sean Hannity is going to moderate. Alex Sammon explains what is going on here, and admits that he will be watching this mess when it all goes down next Thursday. We watch this stuff so you don’t have to!
Bradley does it again ✨
Bradley Cooper once again directs himself as one half of a famous, feuding couple (the last time was in A Star Is Born)—and our movie critic Dana Stevens is feeling it. “Cooper’s sophomore film far outshines the common run of contemporary biopics in its artful construction and attention to emotional nuance,” she writes of his efforts in Maestro, the story of legendary composer Leonard Bernstein.
Thanks-judging ⚖️

Today, Slate is …*CLAW GAMES FOR RAMEN WORLD
If you’re a careful reader of Slate, you’ll notice that the asterisk in the upper left-hand corner of the homepage typically features a fun phrase from a recent Slate piece. You might also notice that today’s is a little … weirder than usual!
AdvertisementWell, Slatest subscriber, because we’re thankful for you, we wanted to let you in on the inside joke: Today the mood in Slate Slack was decidedly “pre-holiday.” While discussing the idea that airlines may use personal customer data to display targeted ads on the in-flight entertainment systems, executive editor Susan Matthews threw out the phrase “claw games for ramen world.”
What she meant: sometimes it feels like we’re headed into a dystopia where you have to do humiliating little tasks (like a claw game) to get basic things (like ramen). We just couldn’t resist how bizarre—and accurate—that felt. So we decided to tell you about it.
May your Thanksgiving tables be full of food that was joyful to acquire! Thanks so much for reading, and we’ll see you back here on Monday.
